Recently, China revealed to the public the impressive capabilities of its fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, the J-20, also known as the “Mighty Dragon.” China’s Ministry of Defense has shared captivating footage showing the aircraft hovering, performing complex maneuvers and firing an air-to-air missile in an unprecedented demonstration.
This stealth fighter never ceases to amaze with its versatile capabilities. In addition to firing missiles in front of the cameras, the J-20 demonstrated its ability to engage in varied missions, including escort, high-speed maneuvers and even aerial refueling, thus demonstrating its operational versatility.
The entry of the J-20 on the scene marked a significant turning point for China in the race for fifth-generation stealth fighters. This has consolidated the nation’s growing military capabilities, particularly in the South China Sea and around Taiwan, while allowing China to narrow the technology gap with the United States.
Visually different from other aircraft in its class, the J-20 stands out for its unique design. Its long frame and towering nose fins clearly set it apart from similar aircraft such as Lockheed Martin’s F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II, as well as the Russian Su-57 and Su-75.
The technical characteristics of the J-20 testify to its remarkable performance. With its impressive dimensions – length of 21.2 meters, wingspan of 13 meters, height of 4.69 meters – and a maximum take-off weight of 37,000 kilograms, this aircraft shows a significant load capacity and a remarkable autonomy.
In terms of weapons capacity, the J-20 can carry up to 11,000 kilograms of weapons, neatly housed in internal bays and four pylons under the wings. The apparent absence of an autocannon suggests an orientation toward ranged engagements rather than close combat.
