Government under pressure to make readjustments amid budget target talks

Amid discussions over the 2024 budget target, the government has come under pressure to readjust federal employee salaries. The National Permanent Negotiation Table (MNNP) meets this Thursday (16).

Several sectors are calling for, at least, an increase forecast. For example, employees of the federal police announced a suspension of their activities for a day to protest against the restructuring of the company’s careers.

The Confederation of Public Service Workers (CONDSEF) also promises demonstrations if it does not receive a positive signal. They are organizing an all-day vigil in the federal capital.

But all requests for adjustment come up against the commitment of the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, to maintain the zero deficit objective.

Despite recent statements by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who has publicly questioned the achievement of this goal, the perception in different wings of government and also in Congress is that Haddad bought time.

At least in the budgetary orientation law, which must be voted on next week, there should be no amendment message aimed at modifying the budgetary objective.

Possible changes, if any, will be defined after the vote on the economic agendas considered priorities by the government. In particular, those who anticipate an increase in income.
