The match was a kind of “final”, since the Italians and Ukrainians faced each other in a duel valid for the final round of the Qualifiers with the same number of points — 13. Whoever won would be ranked in second place — the first was already held by the English leader, with 20 points.
Italy had the advantage of the draw by beating Ukraine on goal difference — 7 to 3. Now, the Ukrainians will continue to fight to qualify for the European Championship in Germany in the play-offs.
Speaking of Germany, Monday’s duel took place at the BayArena in Leverkusen, as Ukraine could not organize its matches on national territory due to the war against Russia.
Other qualifications for Euro 2024
This Monday’s event also guaranteed the rankings of the Czech Republic and Slovenia.
The Czechs beat Moldova 3-0 and took second place in Group E, dominated by surprising Albania led by Brazilian coach Sylvinho.
Slovenia won the direct confrontation against Kazakhstan, 2-1, and took second place in Group H, with the same 22 points as leader Denmark.
