On Wednesday, November 1, 2023, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, on an official visit to Tanzania, delivered iconic words acknowledging and apologizing for the atrocities committed by German colonial forces during the 20th century. During his trip to Tanzania, the German head of state expressed his respect for the victims of German colonial rule.
More precisely, Frank-Walter Steinmeier made his request for forgiveness during his visit to Songea, a place associated with a tragic event in colonial history. He acknowledged the abuses committed by German colonial forces against the local population, in particular evoking a Maji-Maji (Mai-Mai) massacre that occurred in the early 20th century.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier emphasized his responsibility as Germany’s representative and said: ” As the German president, I would like to apologize for what the Germans did to your ancestors here.”
